FAQ

What are Otrivine Antistin Eye Drops used for?

Otrivine Antistin Eye Drops are used to relieve the symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis, including red, itchy, watery, or swollen eyes. Common causes include hay fever, pet dander, dust mites, and pollen.

How do Otrivine Antistin Eye Drops work?

These eye drops contain two active ingredients:

  • Antazoline, an antihistamine that helps block the allergic reaction
  • Xylometazoline, a decongestant that reduces redness and swelling by narrowing blood vessels in the eye

Together, they provide fast, effective relief from allergy-related eye discomfort.

Can I use Otrivine Antistin for hay fever?

Yes, Otrivine Antistin is commonly used to treat eye symptoms caused by hay fever, such as itchiness, watering, and puffiness around the eyes.

How quickly do Otrivine Antistin Eye Drops work?

Relief is usually felt within minutes of using the drops. The antihistamine starts working quickly to stop the itch, while the decongestant helps reduce redness and swelling.

How often can I use Otrivine Antistin Eye Drops?

The recommended dose is 1 or 2 drops into each affected eye, up to four times a day. Do not exceed the stated dose and avoid using for more than 7 consecutive days unless advised by a healthcare professional.

Are Otrivine Antistin Eye Drops suitable for children?

These drops are not suitable for children under 12 years old. If your child is experiencing allergy-related eye symptoms, please consult one of our pharmacists for a suitable alternative.

Can I use Otrivine Antistin with contact lenses?

No, you should remove contact lenses before using Otrivine Antistin Eye Drops. Wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting your lenses after applying the drops.

Can I use these drops alongside other allergy medications?

In many cases, yes—but if you're taking other antihistamines or decongestants, it’s best to consult one of our pharmacists before combining treatments to avoid potential interactions or side effects.

Can Otrivine Antistin Eye Drops cause side effects?

Some people may experience temporary stinging or burning after applying the drops. In rare cases, side effects like blurred vision, dry eyes, or increased irritation may occur. If you notice anything unusual, stop using the product and seek medical advice.

It’s a shame that this eye drop has fallen out of favour in most high-street pharmacies as it’s the only one that provides instant relief for me - it contains an antihistamine and an anti-inflammatory; Unlike the ones that contain sodium cromoglycate (a mast cell stabiliser so best used before your allergy season starts and in my opinion not as good as this one for instant relief). Otrivine Antistin does sting a little when first put it in your eyes but, those who suffer with itchy eyes from allergies, will probably agree that the stinging is actually quite nice when your eyes have been itching badly! I have used Otrivine Antistin eye drops for years and hope to never be without them - I think they’re amazing. It’s even great to keep on you for topical use on the skin if you get a bite or sting but of course that’s not what it’s licensed for!
